What is Nylon, what are its properties and what can I use it in?

Nylon or nylon was the first synthetic fabric in the world and it is a synthetic polymer that was developed as an alternative to silk, and although in the beginning it was an expensive fabric, its price has been greatly reduced until today. As a curiosity, the name nylon is said to derive from New York and London.

Nylon is a fabric known for its strength, and is widely used in the manufacture of sportswear. In fact, many sportswear manufacturers blend nylon with other fabrics to improve its elasticity and lightness. Other properties of nylon are its smooth surface with good color retention, which does not fade easily, its softness and sheen, how easy it is to maintain and wash (it manages to keep its structure and size with each wash), and its resistance to fungus, mildew and mosquitoes. It does not absorb moisture like other synthetic fabrics and has low permeability, so it can retain heat and is widely used in raincoats. Nylon has a considerably high melting point, but when the point is exceeded, the fabric melts, so care must be taken when cooking and ironing. It is best to check that the iron has a nylon setting before applying heat.

The main applications for nylon are women's hosiery, leggings, yoga pants and other types of tight-fitting and athletic pants for women. In addition to textile use, it is also useful in the manufacture of automotive parts (such as the gas tank) and other machines, in zippers and seat belts, in guitar strings or screws, making this fabric a very versatile fabric.

Nylon fabric and the environment

Despite its versatility, nylon fabric has only one drawback; the environmental impact to produce it is very high, and furthermore, it is not biodegradable. Therefore, it is essential to avoid the production of new nylon fabric and the best way to use it is by reusing existing nylon fabrics. Therefore, we recommend you to buy nylon fabrics in a circular way, taking advantage of the existing nylon surplus to create new garments with this fabric.
